Internet Anthropology 101: Culture and Anticulture, an understanding of internet trends

Lately, attention has shifted toward understanding how the internet behaves, not as technology but as people. Every time we open our phones, we are stepping into a giant cultural experiment where we trade something called social currency. It is not money. It is relevance. It is belonging. It is identity.

And the way we earn it always comes back to culture and counter culture.

Culture is the big wave everyone rides. When a sound, a look or a joke spreads everywhere at once, that is culture. Joining in gives you a kind of social warmth. People get you. You feel synced with the moment.

Counter culture is the opposite energy. It is the people saying, “Not for me”, or “I am doing my own version”, or “I want the weird corner, not the main stage.” And that also gives social currency. It signals individuality, taste, difference.

Now here is where it gets even more interesting. The internet used to feel like one giant monoculture. Everyone saw the same viral video, the same meme, the same reference. It felt like one big shared world.

But now we are moving into something closer to polyculture, or many cultures happening at the same time. You and I could be online at the same moment, in the same app, and live in completely different digital universes. Different subcultures. Different references. Different heroes. Different rules for what earns social currency.

And this shift ties everything together.

Monoculture gives us the moments where everyone is in on the same joke. Polyculture gives us the thousands of small worlds where people build identity, edge and belonging in their own way.

Culture creates the mainstream wave. Counter culture pushes back and creates the underground. Monoculture gives the whole internet one big stage. Polyculture breaks the stage into a hundred rooms with their own tribes.

And the social currency we earn depends on how we move between these spaces.
